The Pyrenees Mountains are located on the border between Northern Spain and Southern France.

Baqueira Beret and the Aran Valley are excellent places to get started on ski mountaineering or cross-country skiing. The slopes here are gentle, there is less risk of avalanche (compared to the alps), and you are less likely to fall into a crevasse.


True solitude can be achieved by ski traversing across some of the still untouched areas of the Pyrenees. It’s the perfect place to get away from it all.


Unfortunately, the quality of the snow powder on the prepared runs does not match the standard of that found in the Alps. On the downhill slopes, the snow often gets thin or slushy near the bottom. This gets worse towards the end of the season.

This is normally a bigger problem for resorts on the eastern side of the Pyrenees. This is partly caused by strong sunlight and low precipitation. The wind can also compound the problem, by blowing the snow away or packing it hard together.

The mountains on the west side of the Pyrenees usually get more mist and rain because of their location close to the Atlantic. This can basically melt the snow away. It’s highly advisable to check weather predictions before you book any skiing holiday here.

Snowboarding in the Pyrenees has become increasingly popular over the past few years. Boarders flock to this region each year and are well catered for in all the resorts.

Off season activities include; walking, cycling, trekking, horseriding and golf. Watersports are also popular.
