Parc d’Aiguestortes is the only national park in Catalonia. It covers an area of 10,000 hectares. The area is split into two halves; on the east side, there is Espot and Estany, and on the west right side, you will find the Boi Valley.
The Escrita river flows through the eastern side of the park. Here you will also find the “Estany de Sant Maurici” – a large, peaceful lake, set in a colourful natural setting.
On the west side, there is the river Sant Nicolau. It flows down rapidly through the Aiguestortes or “twisted waters” valley.
Both the east and west sides of the park are worth visiting. You should spend at least a couple of days, to explore the whole area.
Free maps are available from the tourist offices in the park. They are not too detailed, so it is probably a good idea to buy a proper one, if you plan on doing some serious trekking.
One route you can take is to go east - west (or vice versa) from one side of the park to the other. Travel via the Stony de Sant Maurici lake and the saint Nicolou river. You will come across some impressive trails and passes. The total journey time is approximately 9 hours, so a good level of fitness is required. |
