Montserrat literally means, "Sawed Mountain“. It is a fascinating rock structure of such unique beauty that it has long captured the hearts of the Catalan People. It is a very powerful symbol in this area of Spain. Montserrat is just 40 kilometres inland from Barcelona and a lengthy trip from Baqueira Beret, but well worth it.. The surrounding area is relatively flat, making it visible from hundreds of miles away. Although it is part of the Pyrenees mountain range, this unique geological formation stands alone dramatically against the landscape.
At the very top of this fascinating structure there is a monastery. Although most of it was built recently, some of it dates back to the 11th Century.
You can get to the top either by car or by Gondola ride. The journey can be a bit daunting, and if you are not too fond of heights…don’t look down!!
On top of Montserrat, there are a number of walks, of varying length, to choose from. There is also the monastery to explore.
The views from anywhere at the top are spectacular. The rock formations are truly unique. It’s best to get out there and spend time exploring; looking at the rock formations close up, and appreciating the amazing scenery. |
