The landscapes and terrain here are perfect for cycling. The scenery certainly helps too. This dramatic location has been chosen for the Spanish Vuelta and the Tour de France. The area is not just for professionals. Anyone can ride here. Some of the routes are easy. The variety is immense, so you can pick and choose what level of difficulty you want. Easier rides tend to be along the river valleys, where the slopes are more gentle.
The Pyrenees is known for its dramatic mountain peeks, but you can also find many small hills here too. In fact, the Cerdanya area is almost completely flat.
These places are perfect for those who just want a calm relaxing ride.
It's also a good place to go mountain biking, which has become very popular here. There are many man made tracks designed specifically for off-road cycling. All skill levels are catered for.
There are many recognized routes to choose from, particularly in the French area.
The eastern side has the Circuit des Aspres, which is 85 kilometres and the Circuit des Donjons Cathares, which is 105 kilometres. These are both relatively easy journeys.
Towards the centre, the routes get tougher. The Baronnies and Pays de Sault areas are probably the least demanding in this area.
You can also try the Tour de France route. There are numerous possibilities here. Of course, you don't have to do the whole route!! Col de Tourmalet is a good area to start with.
The Spanish side of the Pyrenees does not have as many recognized routes, although this is changing; more and more guidebooks are being published each year. The hot weather in Spain during the summer months puts a lot of people off coming here, although, towards the coast (Santiago route), you are sure to find company. Cycling in the Pyrenees can be very peaceful and enjoying. You can also cover large distances within one day. |
